In 1949, Lois Lloyd, founder of SHORE, began an informal organization to provide services for her daughter Patricia "Patty" and other children with mental retardation in the north shore area. Services were provided in her Evanston home, which allowed networking with other parents who had children with similar needs. This innovative effort led to the formal incorporation in 1951 of the North Shore Association for Retarded Children.
Lois' energy and creative spirit generated further development of the organization leading to the establishment of the first public school program for children with moderate to severe, intellectual disabilities in the state of Illinois.
Today, SHORE provides a comprehensive array of services including small, scattered, integrated living arrangements, vocational center, senior and adult day programs, early intervention, in-home respite care, and service coordination. These programs are located in Evanston, Morton Grove and Skokie. Each year, over 500 individuals with developmental disabilities receive services with nearly 400 enrolled on a regular basis. |
